Grim I.S....

Three nights ago on RhyDin's Streets there
was a typical "tragic accident" among the
youths of the realm. Due to our erratic coverage
and conflicting stories this editorial has been
postponed to let you, our readers, receive the
most accurate information. Apparently two
RhyDin youths were quickly taken to RhyDin's
Central Hospital in the after-dinner hours. One
youth was a young boy by the name of Isaiah
Servante, the other was the notorious street-siren
Millicent Grim. Apparently the accidents were
connected, causing the two to be brought in a
single ambulance- yet the causes for injury were
far from similar. This seems to be a mystery not
close to conclusion in that all witnesses refuse to
respond. Our speculation as to the consequences
can not be divulged do to the fact that these
individuals are minors. However, the RhyDing
Starr has pictured them on the cover of this week's
issue.

Nonetheless, we have heard that this is not the first
time that the singer, most well known for her white
garb in a sea of all that wants to be dark and gloomy,
has visited the hospital under similar conditions. It
was rumored that her band /\bsinthe /\fter /'/\idnight
was supposed to make its debut at the elite "Club
Sacrifice" within the next few weeks. It is not known
whether this will be canceled, postponed or
discontinued entirely. There apparently has been
much quarreling in the AaM headquarters as to
release dates. The band has not put out an album in
two years, much to the displeasure of their
Industrial/Goth fans. The girl's manager, Jonathan
Davis, refused to answer any of our questions other
than his explicit answer "There'll be a damn CD out
soon." followed by several unnecessary epithets.

Regarding the accident there has been very little
information, mostly contributed by several greedy
nurses. The two youths are said to be recovering
slowly after both were considered in critical condition.
There seems to be some controversy as to the
actions/identity of the young man which can also be
found in the RhyDing Starr.

For more information on the Grim Camp, turn to
page 27 for the last interview with the sullen little
siren, reprinted from a year ago to date.

"Far beyond a visible sign..." --Millicent Grim

London Times: May 18th

It seems that not all tourists in our lovely city are as
appreciative of the landmarks as our own indigenous
people. It also seems that more and more, the spot
light can't refuse the faces of those well prone to it.
The evening of May 17th will be remembered as one
of the more unique for the Tower of London. This
once palace, then prison, now tourist attraction has
seen it all in the past centuries. Or has it?

It appears that the rumors of /\bsinthe /\fter /'/\idnight
star sightings are indeed true. Our paparazzi have
always enjoyed following the too popular band when
they appear on our soils. Debatably the United States
originating group has had a better reception on our
island when compared to their foster continent. It is
well known that the singer and founder. Millicent Grim,
started the group with an array of Londoner's while
living on our soil. Much to England's dismay, and the
AD4 record label's contentment, the band has declared
the USA its birthmother. All would be fair in this battle
of love and war were it not the case that many of the
members have made it a bit of a game to cross the
Atlantic and hide away in the small pubs and higher
class, more expensive, silent treatment, velvet rope
goth/industrial rooms. Rumor's rage far too late for
a member to be cornered. That is, unless the law
is involved.

And so the law greeted the leading lady, or shall we
say girl, Millicent Grim back to her foster parent soil.
The late evening/early morning after a controversial
and secret private party for an unnamed musician
brought her and her new guitarist/lover, Gabriel Sharp,
to older ground. A night of sight seeing became an evening
of breaking and entering. These charges, however, were
somehow dropped and made light of in lieu of the soon-to-
be-brawl that opened on Tower Hill's soil. Apparently the
singer and the guitarist were confronted by enraged fans
(rumored to actually be old friends or former band
potential) and rushed into the gated walls of the Tower.
The historical site, notorious for it's ability to keep
people in, apparently fails to keep 5 scrawny 'goths'
out of her interior. Several statues and stained glass
window's later, the Beefeater's finally brought down the
crew by capturing the nameless assailants and calling
Scotland Yard.

Little information is known about the cause of the brawl
however, each member of the incident was taken to
London's closest hospital and treated for various
wounds. All attendants at the hospital refuse to answer
specific questions, however the nature of the band
member's release and return to the US with absolutely
no consequences is unanswered for. Of course our
reporters were unable to catch and question the /\a/'/\
members, which isn't surprising at all. Be sure that
when these two return to London, which they always do,
London Times will certainly demand further explanation.

The rumors circulating around this story have reached
fanzines and music news all over the country. Various
attempts to decode this curious occurrence range from
guesses of paranormal possession to underground Mafia
type cover ups. One supposed 'eye witness' claims that
the Yard, as well as the Beefeater's, were approached by
third parties who literally talked the musicians out of
custody. Such stories have been known to surround
Miss Grim and Mr. Sharp. The Times refuses to comment
on these various accusations for integrity's sake.

A call to the band's manager, Jonathan Davis, revealed
nothing about the goings on for the evening of the 17th.
However, due to the press and popular curiosity,
Mr. Davis appeased inquiries by lending the Times an
exclusive tip. "They're working for something on this
Next album. Whether they're in London or Timbuktu,
/\a/'/\ members are in anticipation of their up coming
album and immanent tour." says Davis. With news as
to the addition and removal of "Casey Spencer" and
"Queenie" respectively, the Times assumes that
"up coming" and "immanent" are in references to several
months of work and training for the new Member.
Casey Spenser, an old face for underground music
is said to have several pages in the 'up coming'
Vanity Fair for their annual 'post modern' issue. This
would be the first time a too-young and well dyed
musician will grace the center pages of this normally
clean cut magazine. What else does this band have
in store for the populace and England? Apparently
they can get away with 'murder', we look forward to
spotting them again in our midst. Or rather, pinning
them down, drawing and quartering, and desperately
asking where they buy their eyeliner.

"like a leper messiah" --Millicent

The magazine was a travesty. One of the most successful music magazines in the business had fallen down that long hole to hell. (Backstreet Boys won nearly all of the "Best ____ of the Year" awards.) For a long time they had been one of /\bsin†he /\f†er /'/\idnigh†'s biggest supporters. The band had hit goth/industrial on the head and had made main stream in numbers, but not main stream in fan support. Which, really, for the singer, was idealistic. Too much so. (A band full of teenagers didn't necessarily need teen fans). They were somewhere between /\/|\/\ and Switchblade Symphony in both sound, and record sales. At least, the second cd had been a hit. The first EP wasn't as well known, but the members were young and they were on their English record label then. The band had met in England you see, when Milli lived with her cousin Amelia. The EP was now one of the hottest selling imports. Everyone had it.
For that record breaking second cd the band had actually been on the cover of Rolling S.. The cover was amusing and notably one of the best. The band was garbed in all their black, denoting it as one of those things that should never be shown in sun light. (The magazine loved playing up imagery, that and naked women.) Cole was on the cover, purring as only bassists can at the eye rolling, yet somewhat snarling Morrighan. Morri was laced up in something with long sleeves that went well past her hands and had lots of electrical tape. It looked like a straight-jacket reminiscent coat-shirt. It was perfect, they had given it to Morri after getting her to pose in it. It had become one of the drummer's symbols for a while.
In only a foot closer of foreground was Millicent. Her hands clasped in front of her stomach. A hip cocked and a hipbone peaking out of the incredible gauze material skirt the designer's had made for her. Her corset was gauze too, the ribbing could be seen in three darker white bands over her white skin. Because she was 15 they couldn't show anything pink, so the trick was that there were white tape squares over the tip of each curve, easily seen through the corset. Oh the irony. The corset narrowed her waist into an angle. The skirt was ripped mesh at the bottom that looked like it faded into mist. There were dusty, hazy wing-like shapes behind her, but the body of Damien the synth player brought everything back into focus. One of his hands splayed over half of Milli's stomach and he grinned like the devil over her shoulder. His eyes were ice blue, his cheekbones perfect, and his black hair was chin length. That was the cover, the scenery was in an ivy run over garden, fountains, and no sky.

/\bsin†he /\f†er /'/\idnigh† Anyone?
The Grim world of Fame.

Inside had been many more pictures, the article had been 10 pages long, highlighting the meaning of being goth/industrial in a world that was slowly becoming rock and eventually hip-hop. There was the controversy of typical devil worship and a dive into Millicent's supposed wiccan background. There was a picture of her posing pseudo-scandalous, a sheet over her lap and clutched to tiny white curves. Her smile that was always more moue and her hair that was streaked in a sickly grey-pink. "Melancholy grabs Millicent Grim at a more tender age." They even mentioned her twin brother. The article was littered with breaking stereotypes and commenting on how such a band of beautiful, pretty people could possibly have so much talent. And that was their joke, their "thing"; Beautiful Genius- the Goth traits of the 90s?.
The year had been theirs, they toured hard and Milli had just moved back from England. Their tour dates were sold out all over the world. They played medium sized venues, but it was the ground breaking idea of it all that caught actual media attention. The media sat around like a wolf in waiting, praying that something would litter the band's names or they'd be arrested for satanic rituals. How could these kids be normal? What was happening to youth? Millicent's lyrics were too artistic to be embarrassing so they forgave her her sweet 15 years.

Then Damien died. And everything ended. The tour had been over. The press loved following the pretty couple. (A relationship of convenience.) The band seemed to have two leading stars which equaled the media attention of the typical model with the typical musician. Damien dying at 20 with so much cocaine in his car he could have only been a dealer got the band negative news. But somehow it was overshadowed with anticipation for the next album. The Sacrifice Club was featured in an issue, the owner, Neil's band was just as hot but more main stream and famous. However, they hadn't done anything big for a long time. So AaM was to be the savior of the scene.

It didn't happen. But it was only a year. Things hadn't even died down. There were small articles here and there. Deacon's joining. Cole gone. Millicent frequenting Sacrifice like she was a normal person. The fans still loyal. The album never left the top 20 readers poll. It was only a year, after all.
Noone knew Millicent was engaged. Noone knew how much Damien's death had destroyed her. Made her make herself numb, and therefor it worked against everything she'd ever been. He'd been more in love with her, but she still loved him dearly. She wasn't prepared for him to leave. And only she remembered the night he went out to make his pick up.
Millicent had done one of the Q&A pages the magazine liked to do. Answering enough questions to be interesting, skipping out of enough to keep her sane.

Everyone bought this magazine.
And now there was this month's issue.
After all, Trent Reznor was on the cover. But in the corner was an A-typical gothic font, and it simply said AaM? Milli had heard of it only because they'd called Jonathan, their manager. The press release had gone out that yes, Gabriel Sharp was the new guitarist. Apparently this was invitation for a free-for-all. After Millicent's "accident" things had gotten hot, and now the noose was slipped over their heads. "Make an album or jump!" is what everything screamed. Her last ring of bruises around her throat were barely gone. They'd faded to a green-yellow-blue that could be patted over with white powder.
Their article was only less two pages and a "(cont'd)" from the article on The Fragile. Millicent was honoured but was unamused. (Reznor had infinitely more talent, she was sure of this.) At first the old pictures were amusing, seeing the old cover in a smaller version, and seeing that picture of herself, nearly 2 years ago. It brought a smile. And then it went down hill. "Where were they?" it asked. It spoke about how she was seen frequently, and so therefore must not be anywhere near a studio. It spoke of Sacrifice and how Neil was back after his much longer break. And then there were the pages on the members. Intimate portraits of Damien and of Cole as well as the rest of them. Where was Cole now?
Millicent was underage still (though not for long). They could only dig up her past so much. Nothing too bad showed up, but it hurt most of them. Gabriel was turned inside out. Records of his had shown up, a small picture of him when he was young and in his band in high school. There were pictures of him now. Pictures of him on the street, and pictures of him with Millicent. The magazine wondered if Gabriel got the job because he was someone else in Millicent's skirts. There were vague references to flings with DJs, even something about an artistic Brit. The magazine promised to look into everything more closely. There was a picture of Millicent with Adrian; the pretty businessman with his crushing hold around her waist. The magazine spread them thin through the article, no, it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
And then there was the reader's poll.

"Who's Prettier? Sharp or Grim?"
This was coupled with several other questions. The media was sick of hearing about the band not doing anything. The band was pretty again, noone could give that up, but where'd the talent gone? Were they dried up? They asked poll questions about Morrighan alone and about Gabriel alone.

"What band could this perfectly talented individual work in rather than drowning industrial/goth?" Morri had a side project, it was good. It put things in a positive light. But the bands for her choices were
a) /\/|\/\,
b) Gravity Kills,
c) Hole
d) Filter
e) Curve

"Who would you like to see him on the most?" It was amusement in questionable taste. The multiple choices were
a) Angelina Jolie
b) Milla Jovavich,
c) the red head from Devil's Advocate
d) Shirley Manson of Garbage.
e) Neil Gaiman's comic book character "Death"
(Millicent they said, was a "given".)

The magazine had called Jonathan. "We want them on the cover again, we hear they do have new work. We want them on the cover, and we want Gabriel and Millicent nude, something risque. We're playing up their affair." Funny how they said 'affair', and they didn't know the half of it. Funny how it wasn't even an affair to begin with.
Word was slowly becoming quite well known around Club Sacrifice. The regulars were happy with being part of the news, and the fans were becoming viciously loyal, even while outsiders were becoming viciously skeptical.

L, they need a synth player. And they need it now.

Tomorrow the pictures of Gabriel and Millicent on the floor of Medieval tavern will be published in RhyDing Starr. It'll also have one of them handcuffed together on RhyDin streets, wearing no winter clothes, but wrapped in arms. It'll also say that Millicent has had his child though it didn't live because instead of lungs it had bat wings. Why do people read such trash?

"so glow, child, glow" --Millicent
9/15/01 3:44 AM Eastern Daylight Time

"The album entitled Apocatastasis hit the streets at midnight-- Tower Records all over RhyDin remaining open just a little later than usual to make some legal pre-sales. This, the third album from Absinthe After Midnight has come after a long waiting period of three years. There are new additions, new styles and new faces all coming with this one. And the gutsy economical move of not allowing it to be reviewed prior to the fans hearing it has left many in suspense-- and of course gotten the group more press coverage than they already had. Of course, none of the band members have been in the public eye in order to question, and we don't expect them to be any easier to find in the near future. I can tell you one thing though, the album art may win them a nomination alone... nevermind the wonderfully-horrible photography throughout the album. Ehem. The first two, yes, two, simultaneously released singles from this cd can be found at your local radio station. So if you want to hear them, keep an ear open for "Protean" and "Empty Blue". None of us here at MTv have heard anything about videos just yet, but I suppose we can only ask for so much. This is Sabrina, MTv News."

Modern Wedding, Modern Funeral.

Post by Millicent Grim »

After so many years (how many?), Millicent Grim had released a solo album.

No one knew about it.

A website popped up somewhere in the black hole of the internet. Someone had figured out what it was within 24 hours.

There were a million downloads within 48.

The site said that a vinyl was to be released in a few weeks. There wasn't much else, not even track listings. But there had, at least, been an album title. "Modern Wedding, Modern Funeral." There wasn't any album art. Though, if you looked through the html of the site, which eventually someone did, you found one image:

Image

Slowly, like a macabre easter egg hunt, people were finding song titles. Amazingly, there were 17 tracks. Some were just music. These were heavy on the keyboards and even some traditional piano. Obviously it was Millicent playing. Some were ballads laced thick with Millicent's haunting voice. There were even a few EBM dance tracks. Those had some bite. The Club started playing those immediately. Right now, the six EBM tracks were surreptitiously named after the old Absinthe After Midnight members: like honorary grave markers. Because, as one fan wrote in a 32 page essay on a fan site, each of them 'felt like' one of the members. There was a Millicent, a Morrighan, a Casey, a Leighton, a Dimitri... and of course, there was a Gabriel. In fact, some of the sites were fighting over whether one of the 6 EBM tracks should be called Gabriel or one of the haunting ballads really earned the title more. This was a heated debate.

The dance track tended to be called Gabriel to make the matching set of six, while the ballad was often called Gabriel Ascending. Or Gabriel Gave (which played with a line of lyrics in the chorus). Or, a favorite among the more die-hard fans, Gabriel's Grave.

But, slowly, the track lists were being found, so the debates started cooling down as it didn't really make sense to argue. They would figure it out eventually. They should probably spend their time looking instead of fighting.

The first track name that was found was track 4. It was the track that was actually played on the radio and caused all the rest of the drama. It was a track that was bought by more than one very popular TV show to be used in dramatic climaxes. No less than 2 season finale's killed off a major character to Millicent's eerie vocals. (Much like "If I had a Heart" by Fever Ray.) And it sounded a little like it could be a Fever Ray track. But with a bit more mystery and a bit more pain. And maybe a bit more Qntal mixed with Halsey. Regardless, you couldn't go anywhere without hearing "Salome" playing out of some store or some car window.

It took a few weeks before people started thinking about where Millicent Grim just may be hanging out.

It took another few days before paparazzi started bothering Jonathan.

"Spinal Landscapes" - EP Release

Post by Millicent Grim »

An EP was released on Vinyl Day at local record shops. It was released only in this format, and the first reactions were about pretension and recluses. The anger was palpable. But so was the admiration.

The EP did well, even with her less secular fanbase touting more anger than revelation.

The Track Lists:

0. iron staircase
1. Black silk sheets
3. Edinburgh
5. New Orleans
8. Cathedral
13. Star-gazing
21. [Redacted]
34. Her Name

Hidden Tracks
55. Aetrnum
89. Never

999999999. Cover - Rainbow (ft. Meadow Starling)

===================
Technically the number of tracks made it that it was really an album, not an EP. But for those who ordered it, it was filed as such.

------------------------
Track Descriptions. Written in scrawled notes in a large, record sized book in the package.

0. iron staircase
What it was to have sex with him the first time.

The desire to be near him.

The feeling of being honest and unguarded and then him being pulled away and knowing what it was like to want something for the sake of wanting.

It would start out delicate and sort of fragile, broken. Embodiment of his lips on a shoulder and not even watching, they’re just there. Like he steals it but also he’s just feeling what skin feels like on his lips, the sensation of being soft and a little electric.

Then it deepens to want. A sort of ache with a touch of surprise because the ache comes on almost unexpectedly. It doesn’t get fast here but the drop out of sound and segue to want is a change in tempo.

The interruption is actually a skipped beat. Like NIN’s Wish in the second stanza. A silence as the tempo raises. And then there’s a flood of beautiful and more symphonic music, a starburst of sound as I.... I really, truly did it to free myself from the need to kiss him. Nothing in my mind but that. I HAD to. Had to, a fluttering dying need. And then to wildly just dive headlong into the experience of him and wanting him inside and really to stay there forever. How he grabs , the soft plush press of fingers and pressing against the wall. Promises promises promises of all wants. Heavy palms and surging waves of sound and then everything… This is very much like La mer from The Fragile.

It is release in finding an undiscovered land that you sought with all your heart and you FIND it and it’s yours. What it was like for the first time.

It’s just about my experience of it. Not his.

It is heavy with want. And the sexuality in the latter half is utterly apparent. It’s the first time I understood.... why. And it increases with him. There is like a shadow of him. A pace that like leads the music to speed up. Something dark in the background that happens first that lures the rest of it to become wild.

1. Black silk sheets
black silk sheets is about being together in general. cause i imagine that's an image that captures what that is.

Perfect moments. What it was to have no walls between us. And includes a protected-feeling of sorts. Like that third time we f***ed.

3. Edinburgh
Old and perfect.

Honestly I love Scottland because I believe in its morals and its martial qualities as well as the romance, secrets and darkness. So much death. Fire. plague. But so beautiful.

Old history of kings and queens. A history i would never have.

I lived [REDACTED] for a year. Just to be near here, and because this country felt right to me. Primally right. It tasted familiar.

[Instrumental.]

5. New Orleans
A very romantic impression of this city. Returning to an old lover you still love but can never be with.

[A song with a full band. Heavy synthesizers. Some parts are angry.]

8. Cathedral
The difference between a building, and a city having a soul. How they feel different. One landscape, the other a place. Containment, definition and evolution.

It is also about one particular cathedral that means something.

Probably the Hagia Sophia.
And my home

At night.

[There is something eerie and commanding about her voice. The guitar style should feel familiar to old fans.]

13. Star-gazing
I want to show myself, and him, that music can capture a single moment, a single conversation perfectly.

The act of communication. Knowing someone through words and honest discourse.

Mental fucking. Writing a slice of time into sound.
[The piano is fragile, just like her voice.

Lyrics are listed.]

21. [Redacted]
him.

34. Her Name
Me.
From effervescent. Hopeful. Happy.
To want.
To enjoyment.
Without surrender.

55. Aetrnum
My impressions of immortality. The tragedy and triumph of it, as I see it from his perspective. Not the others

...a take on the sorrow of not being immortal.

Of being inconsequential and aware of it yet still free to want something more… even if it wont happen.

89. Never
They’ll never be forever.

What she’ll never understand.

How she can’t tear him in two and crawl in his skin.

How he probably wouldn’t let her.

How she can’t kill for him, or die for him.

The things that they can’t do.

This is just **king awful and longing and a stupid romantic girl who wants to rip out everyone’s heart and throw it on the floor.

The song ends in a pretty, twinkling starlit death of sound.

999999999. Rainbow (ft. Meadow Starling)
A cover of Kesha's track.

Millicent's version of Rainbow was inspired. It was inspired, longing and sad. The first verse seemed eerily biographical, Meadow would recognize this as such and of course that's why Millicent had chosen the song. Millicent had been known to be a monochrome girl. White or black. She wore the occasional spatter of colour, but as the song also said, this was mostly in her snow-white hair. But as Millicent had grown older, she began to have a relationship with colours. And as of late, she was truly exploring what they did to her and what she could do with them. [It reminded one of the Tori lyrics: "To get off he cries "slutty goth" But I'm a brightly colored person."]

And deep down, I'm still a child
Playful eyes, wide and wild, I can't
Lose hope, what's left of my heart's still made of gold

But, of course, Millicent was subculture. Or subculture was in her, and though she should wear mostly black, she wore mostly white. Her musical fan base came from the alternative culture, and most certainly the goth industrial genre. That group afforded her an ability to be fragile, explicit, and artistic. Her rise to fame had been in a band, but also with a solo career. Her solo music broke boundaries, but still leaned heavy on narrative and piano. There was always something a little dark, and most certainly sad in her work and her voice. This song was no exception. Though, there should be no loss of irony in Millicent Grim covering a Kesha song.

In the song, Millicent accentuated intricate, though not overly, fragile runs with her feminine voice throughout the song. Both she and the original artist had matured and had more velvet in their voice. And in this way, her vocals reached out and coiled around the listener, drawing them in to the narrative of the song.

And the song was inherently sad, though hopeful. A girl expressing her point of view in optomisim. And Millicent was expressing it to someone specific, because her primary change in the lyrics was changing the sex of the listener. "Girl" became "boy" On occasion, it became "love."

I found a rainbow, rainbow, baby
Trust me, I know life is scary
But just put those colors on, boy
You gotta learn to let go, put the past behind you
Trust me, I know, the ghosts will try to find you
But just put those colors on, love
Come and paint the world with me tonight
