Possible problem w/ attaining mage...

Post by Face Loran »

One thing that I have noticed since being back, that I feel hurts a new players ability to reach mage, isnt so much the matrix. The matrix isnt perfect but it doesnt keep people from succeeding. It isnt even so much Mages being unforgiving, though that doesnt help.

It seems the biggest problem is possibly the easiest to fix. The standings always seem to be 2 or more weeks behind. How do we expect someone to succeed when they never get their new spells? They reach 2 WoL then need to wait 2 or more weeks before that is reflected in the standings. I dont have numbers in front of me to prove how often a player gets to 2 WoL and then falls below over a week later, but I am sure it happens.. Possibly having that advanced spell the next week may have helped them stay above 2 WoL. When dueling against many upper level duelists a new character with one advanced spell has a much greater chance then one with none.

Maybe I am the only person that recognizes this as a problem... And if everyone disagrees with me then I understand and won't bring it up again. I know it took Face about 3 weeks before he got reinstated as Mage Emeritus..

That's actually a very good point, but who is willing to take on the responsibility of keeping an eye on the standings with regularity? It takes a lot of time to sift through the shift reports and write down who advanced and who hasn't. Some people just don't have the time it takes to do that.

I was looking through the Staff link the other day, and I noticed that DoS has a Warlord Standings Keeper, and DoF has a Emerald Standings Keeper, each of these positions I can understand seeing as there are an awful lot of people who hold that rank, perhaps once the standings get into a habit of updating regularly, there will be a Mage Standings Keeper? That would help the lower ranks rise faster since there will be a separate person worrying about who's mage and who's mage emeritus.

well, the ERS and the Warlord standings were always for seeding for the tournaments and the fun of seeing where you ranked against peers in Emerald vs Emerald/Opal/Diamond and Warlord vs Warlord/Baron/OL dueling. The mage standings always existed for the same thing for the AMT. With us having only 3-5 participants for the AMT every cycle that is where we lost the need for the Mage standings, which is unfortunate. As for the standings, is it purely a problem of not having anyone who is doing them?

So who would be willing to take over the responsibility of updating the standings for Xerzes?

I don't know how long he has held the position, but I don't recall anyone throwing a major tizzy fit over the standings being late in when they're updated. Now that the numbers on the Isle are dwindling, the standings need to start getting updated regularly; but until Xerzes grows tired of being incharge of things where the standings are concerned...he's all we have.

I would be willing to help with the standings for sure if it ment getting them up regularly. How many duels do we have each week on average? I could easily spend some time on a saturday after work putting the updated standings together so it could be posted for Sunday before Fight Night. I was just curious if there were other reasons for why it takes over 2 weeks to be posted sometimes... (Right now its going on its 3rd week late if not posted tomorrow or monday)

How many duels a week depends on how busy the night is really...but I don't think the average is breaking the 30s range, between Sunday and Monday night...I'd say their sitting at 20 or less. To me that's not that many to add up the wins and losses; but I'm efficient like that. I'd have to sit in on a night of dueling to average the number. However, if you want to take up the job, you should speak with Xerzes, Brigath, and Topaz.

I'll see if I can't bring it up to her this afternoon. I'll be over there for coffee and board games. ::grin::

What kind of board games? My favorites are RISK, Clue, and Stratego.

I feel so loved.

Settlers of Catan is pretty phat...my friends and I over the last few years have been playing STarfarer's of Catan...an obvious sequel to the first. It's pretty freaking PHAT as well. Good time, strategic creatively though not very complicated. Easier to play as faras mechanics because you don't have so many pieces like with Risk. I grew up playing a lot of those big board games by Avalon Hill. Diplomacy was one....Shogun......Axis and Allies..
