A Night DoS in the Red Dragon Inn
I haven't been back to the RDI in next to forever so I decided to check out how the flash chat was running. Had a full room, next to 20+ some odd people. That's more than the arena sees on most nights. Well to make a long story short I got to talking with Panther in a PM about how we've been starving for some new blood.
While reluctant to lose "patrons" he agreed that the RoH community and the RDI should share things. So we talked a little while and came up with the RDI possibly having a dueling night in their flashchat. This could possibly bring in some new blood because many of the folks I see over there have never heard of the Rings. We play our game in the RDI's basement!!!
To this Panther pointed out that many do not even play it this way anymore. They have forgotten. So as promised, I thought it over..and am presenting the idea to all of you. We need new members, and Panther wishes for the RDI to have a stronger tie to the community. This is a possible way to obtain both desires.
What do all of you think?

I think I like that idea, especially if they're open to it. Maybe a Fight-Night so they can see all 3 in action?

Panther is backing the idea and I know of a couple people who would be willing to give dueling a try. But you're right, a Fight Night is a better idea that way they can get a taste of the whole menu instead of just an appetizer.
Biggest problem I see with this is..
A) Who would be interested in calling the event? I for one am. But who else?
B) Would any of the duels count towards rank for current duelists, or just those we're trying to bring over? For some of the duelists known for commoner-bashing this could be a bloodbath.
C)Would the duelists from here that agree to help support the event help the crowd learn the game and explain how things go? Or just duel and say nothing positive at all?
Obviously with those three scenarios I'm pointing at how some around the community have been known to not quite make newcomers feel totally welcome. They're seen more like the new batch of freshmen being lined up at the football team's Senior Hit Day. I actually enjoyed being hit, but I'm twisted like that. Moving on.
I just want to see where the RoH community stands with this idea. I hope to hear from more of you.

I agree that it should be a fight night. It gives everyone the opportunity to see all the duels and to try their own hand in it. Calling would therefore require someone with knowledge of all three sports to do it. I, for one, am unqualified, so it would be totally awesome if someone could do it. Or, someone who can call two, and a second person who can call one. Whichever makes it easier.Sylus Kurgen wrote: A) Who would be interested in calling the event? I for one am. But who else?

I say yes. It should count. Because then the new people would be able to look up their records right away and it might give them incentive to improve on it, thus encouraging them to come around a bit more often.Sylus Kurgen wrote:B) Would any of the duels count towards rank for current duelists, or just those we're trying to bring over? I would be willing to help the event, should I be available at the time(Not at work) and I be accepted. I generally am asked a lot of rules questions anyway, ranging from basic to challenge rules. I've been around long enough that I think I could be of some use there.Sylus Kurgen wrote:C)Would the duelists from here that agree to help support the event help the crowd learn the game and explain how things go? All in all, I agree that this is a good idea.

I'd prefer to wait until Panther has a chance to post for this as well. After all he knows which nights would be the busiest for his crowd. I would prefer that we let him choose a day and then we can debate among ourselves whom could possibly be able to assist with the endeavor.
I am cleared for Swords and Magic, so that covers a bit of ground as well.

I am very much up for trying this, I have a few quick comments, the rest should probably be saved for later, managerial discussions as it's more about logistics and such.
Anywho, I would prefer to see it fairly limited, just one ring so it does not overwhelm the rest of the room. (And so it fits in the the RDI IC wise by us clearing out a few tables and chairs)
I would like to see it just be DoS for starters, let's keep this as easy as possible for any potentially new players. I would suggest a caller and maybe 4-5 vetran players come and do a couple demo matches, and the vetrans should then be willing to work at teaching new people how to play... maybe one person "coaching" in IMs while they duel another? I dunno, that can be figured out later.
But overall, yes, I'm up for this if you guys are.

Actually, I can think of no better person to run a DoS exhibition in the RDI than Imp.Imp wrote:Imp will call for that. He can have a lot of fun.![]()

Imp is fun, funny, highly interactive and more than willing to push others to get in the ring. That is something I'd join in on.

It'd be easier to have the duels not count in the official standings.
Keep in mind that the DM logins will not necessarily match an AIM/AOL SN, or character name, currently in the standings. Which means that in order to record those duels, someone will have to go through every duel result and replace the FlashChat handle with the corresponding SN that is used in the RoH standings before those duels can be processed.

I was thinking that same thing. To have this be just an event that won't count for the standings.
Panther is planning this on his side -- picking a date, etc.
We have Imp as the caller (poor unsuspecting women). Now we need duelists.
We have Gnort and Brigath as duelists. I would like to know who else wants to volunteer to show up to duel and teach. We need people to not just duel, but give good RP while dueling -- I know, I know, I don't have to tell you that. Panther was talking about having this in about 3 to 5 weeks. That way it can be promoted and get people interested in coming to the RDI that night.
BTW, if you do not have a log in name for the RDI forum get one before the event. That way you have time to prepare your profile and set up the flash chat. The profiles are linked to the flash chat over there, and people do look at the profiles to get an idea of who they are talking to.
